New Dog Collar Tutorial

February 22nd, 2011

Back when I first started this blog, the very first post I did was a tutorial on how to use an old lanyard to make a dog collar.  Well this time, I decided to take a cheap collar that I had bought for Lucy for Christmas, rip it apart, and use the old hardware to make her a new, more fashionable one.  Here’s what the original looked like (NOTE – my camera batteries were dying, so the quality of the photos is pretty crappy) :

The first thing I did was rip the seams, and take all of the hardware off of the existing collar.  Then, I cut two strips of fabric 1.5″ wide by 21″ long – the length should be the same as the length of the original collar.

Sew the two pieces together along both long sides and one short side, and flip outside right.

I then serged my open end shut and slipped on the slider piece from the end on the right.

Then I slipped on the little rectangular piece (not sure what it is called) on from the left end.

Next I slipped on the clawed part of the clip on the left end, then took the left end and slid it back through the rectangular piece.

Next loosen the slider piece on the right end,

Pull the right end tight again.

Sew loose left end to itself, about 2 inches from the slider.

Slide metal piece onto the right end.

Slide other half of the clasp onto the right end behind the metal piece.

Take the right end and loop it to the left up and under the metal piece back towards the clasp.

Sew end in place so that it allows the metal piece to rest about 2 inches from the clasp.

Then I used this wonderful Felt Flower Tutorial from Mrs. Priss to make a cute little felt flower.  Only I added two small strips of elastic to the back of the felt circle backing so that I could slide it on and off of the collar easily.

And that’s it!  Cute and easy!

Have any of you made a collar recently?  I would love to see them!

Until next time!

Still Catching Up

December 22nd, 2009

I was cleaning out my camera the other day and found some crafts that I had completely forgotten about! So before I get into all of my Christmas goodies I’ve been making, I’m going to share these lovely items with you.

Before the first snowfall I got a request for a medium size dog coat for this lovable pup, Oscar. I just love plaid fashion coats so I applied that look to Oscar’s new winter coat.

I used a pattern featured at Craftzine, Country Gent Tweed Coat, and less than a yard for each of the fabrics. The top fabric is simple cotton quilted to a layer of batting. And the interior is a thicker cotton blend. A cozy combination to keep my four legged friend warm! And to keep his belly full I sent him home with a box of homemade treats! You can find this recipe and others at this great site: Organic Pet Digest.

Catching Up

December 17th, 2009

I’ve been saying to myself for the past couple of weeks, “I really need to do a post about these completed projects!”  And while I would like to do individual posts for each, I have concluded that it is just unrealistic.  So here are the past few months in review:

One Sunday Evening …

As I was watching the Steelers win a Sunday night football game several weeks ago (yes, this was many weeks ago as we have all seen the Steelers take a winning season and turn it into a 5 game losing streak, *sigh*), I decided to pull out the old wire and beads I had laying around and attempt my first wire ring.  And to my surprise, it turned out great!

Unfortunately, I don’t have a ring mandrel (hint, hint, Santa!), so I am only capable of making rings that fit my own fingers (not that that’s a bad thing!).

Then a week or two later…

My friend Jaron and I moved into our glorious new apartment.  And by glorious I mean hardwood floors, granite counter tops, stainless steel appliances, two decks, and two master bedrooms with walk in closets and private baths.  Ahhh the glory.

To celebrate, we threw a housewarming party.  We got all of our furniture moved in and the apartment mostly decorated for the party, bought some yummy food, and got all dressed up, but something didn’t seem right … what could it be?  Oh!  It seems we forgot Bruce!  He needed to feel special too, so I whipped up a party accessory of his own …

brucebowtie

Cute right!?  Just a little bit of ribbon for the bow tie and some cording for the collar.  It was a hit (I mean common, when isn’t he the center of attention!?).

Gobble Gobble!

Then it was time for Thanksgiving!  Jaron and I decided to have Thanksgiving dinner at our new place, inviting our closest friends.  The week prior, I needed something to keep me busy, so my best friend in the whole world, Sarah, and I decided to sew up some aprons for the big day!  Using leftover material from Crystal’s napkins and place mats and this awesome Hostess Apron with Dreamy Bow tutorial from Sew4Home, I came up with a beautiful new apron!  Sarah also crafted one up from this beautiful country garden-like material, and we made one more from a festive fall fabric for our friend Monica and a little one from scraps for Sarah’s beautiful daughter, Grace.  We were the queens of the kitchen that day!

Since then, I’ve been like a elf in Santa’s Workshop, slaving over Christmas gifts and decorations!  It has been consuming most of my time, but the payoff will be well worth it!

Until next time,

PS – I purchased a new camera since my last post, and I LOVE IT!  The quality of pictures are so much better!  Can you tell?

Gearing Up For Homecoming

October 8th, 2009

Of the last 7 years of my life, 6 were spent living, breathing, and being everything that is James Madison University.  Now I know what you’re thinking, “SIX YEARS!?”  But don’t worry, I wasn’t one of those ‘super seniors,’ I used those years in a productive matter, receiving both my undergraduate and graduate degrees, but that’s besides the point.

On October 17th, JMU will host their annual Homecoming game – and this year, I WILL BE ATTENDING!  So I decided to sit down the other day and make a short list of the absolute necessities that I will need :

  • Hotel Room Reservation for myself and fellow Dukes – check
  • JMU Football T-shirts – check
  • Homecoming Tickets – check

Then I decided to create a ‘miscellaneous items I might need to pack … just in case’ list.  (Over-packers always do this) :

  • Beanie hat
  • Scarf
  • Beer Koozie

Of course, I don’t own any of these items in the standard Purple and Yellow colors.  I look at Bruce (my faithful Chihuahua Terrier) and ask him, “You think we should craft these things this weekend?”  To which I get a look that seems to say, “None of this has anything to do with me, why should I care?  Oh, and rub my tummy while you’re at it.”

sleepingbruce

Well obviously Bruce wouldn’t care, none of these things are for him – and then it hits me!  Bruce owns a bazillion collars for every holiday/event/season of the year, but he does not have a JMU collar to wear on game days!  Obviously, we need to fix this situation.  So today folks, I will be showing you how to craft a dog collar out of an old lanyard.

To start, you need the following items:

  • One lanyard (must have a plastic buckle)
  • One key ring (my lanyard also came with this)
  • Matching thread
  • Measuring Tape
  • Scissors
  • Lighter
  • Sewing Machine

The Dog Collar Blueprint:

First, use the measuring tape to measure the length around your dog’s neck (you can also take an existing collar and measure the length of the fabric from point A to B as seen in the picture below).  Then add about 5 inches of length to that.  For Bruce, this ended up being 11 inches.

Next, cut the lanyard apart, measure 11 inches of the cord, and cut.  (Note: if there is a pattern to the cord, be mindful of where you cut.)

After cutting, take your lighter and slightly burn the edges of the cord.  This will make it easier to feed the cord through the buckle, and will prevent the edges from fraying.

Then, slide the key ring and both ends of the plastic buckle onto the cord.  Adjust the buckles so that there is 3 inches allowance on the end where the key ring will be, and two inches of allowance on the other.

Pin down the loose edge one the side without the key and sew.  I went back and forth a few times with the needle to ensure the strength of the seam.

Pin down the second edge, and sew a seam first directly next to the buckle.  Then pull the key ring as close as you can to the new seam, pin down the remaining allowance, and sew your final seam.

Clip all loose threads, and VOILA!  A new collar for gameday!  GO DUKES!

One final note – if you don’t have a lanyard lying around, most fabric stores sell similar cording in the Trim aisle.  My parents dogs, Karson and Kalvin, were quite jealous of Bruce’s new collar, so I went out to Joann Fabrics and found cord in their favorite colors.  Using the buckles and key rings from their old collars and 25 inches of cording for each, I was able to fashion two similar collars for them as well!
