Jewelry Dish Tutorial

June 22nd, 2011

For Mother’s Day this year, I made my Mom a cute little jewelry dish for her dresser.  And when I was perusing through my digital camera I found pics for the tutorial and realized that I never got the chance to share it with you!  This craft is really simple, and would be great to do with younger kids too.  And you can make any size bowl or dish you like, so skies the limit!

Supplies:

  • 1 Package of Fimo Air Dry Modeling Clay
  • Cutting Board
  • Rolling Pin
  • Saran Wrap
  • Acrylic Paint in your choice of color
  • A piece of lace
  • A bowl for modeling
  • A piece of sandpaper

Assembly:

Cover your cutting board and rolling pin with saran wrap – this will make it so the clay won’t stick to it.

Roll your clay out flat, so that it is about 1/4 inch thick.

Using a bowl like a cookie cutter, cut your clay into a circle.

Using your piece of lace, press into the clay so that it leaves an impression and then remove.

Then take your clay circle and press into a bowl.  You’ll want to leave this in the bowl over night to dry.  Once it’s dry it should slide right out.

Once dry, sand down the rough edges, add a couple layers of paint, and you’re done!

So cute, and so simple!

In the future I think I’ll add a glaze to it!

Next time, I’ll be back with another low carb recipe – really eager to try this new one out!

Finally Finished!

June 14th, 2010

So this is embarrassing, but I FINALLY finished my Mom’s mother day gift and gave it to her today.  Ridiculous, I know.

She had asked me to make her a tennis tote, like the one below.

But she wanted a print that would set her tote apart from all of the other ladies – and this is how it turned out!

The outside is made of coral print outdoor decor canvas.  You can find it at Joann’s.

This tote has MEGA storage.  On top of having four outer pockets, it also has an outside zipper pocking on the back!

And I added an extra interior zipper pocket.

My mom L-O-V-E-S it.  As you can see, she stuffed it full!

Before I go, I wanted to let you all know Emily at The Rubber Punkin is celebrating the release of her new stamp set, called Barefoot Summer!  This card is my favorite!

So pretty!  Go over to her site and see what else has been created with the Barefoot Summer stamp set!

I’ve got a tutorial headed your way for super cute vintage looking planters!  So stay tuned!

Mod Podge for Mother’s Day

May 6th, 2010

It’s my best friend Sarah’s birthday today!  HAPPY BIRTHDAY SARAH!!

Anyways, I can’t give her the actual gift that I got her for her birthday today (it’s still a big surprise) so instead I gave her an early mother’s day gift.  It is super cute, and super simple!  So anyone looking for a last minute craft idea for Mom – this is just perfect!

I first took this ADORABLE picture of Grace (her daughter, and lovely model from my first Men’s Shirt Redo) …

And turned it into this, usual this photoshop tutorial: Vintage Polaroid Effect from MyInkBlog.

Cute right?  Then I printed it out at 9″x7″ on card stock, and gathered the following materials.

  • Glossy Mod Podge & Brush
  • One 9″x7″ Craft Board/Frame Thing
  • Acrylic Spray
  • Wood Stain of your preference
  • Sand Paper

First, I sanded the wood piece and wiped it clean. Then I applied a thin layer of Mod Podge to the wood, centered the picture on top, smoothed out all air bubbles, and let dry for about 15 minutes.  Once it was dry, I used the sand paper to ruff up the edges of the picture.  Don’t be afraid to make it look really worn!

Over the next half hour I applied two more coats of Mod Podge, completely coating the top of the picture/wood piece, allowing at least 15 minutes to dry in between.  After applying my last coat of Mod Podge, I let the piece dry overnight.

The next day, I used the wood stain I had leftover from the Buffet Makeover to stain the actual wood, and to give the whole photo a brown hue.  Stain as much as you like, I was going for a reddish brown look to compliment the hues of the picture.  And when the stain is dry, I applied a healthy coat of acrylic spray, to give it a nice shine and to protect the piece from little hands.

It came out just as I was hoping it would!

Another victorious craft using Mod Podge!

Happy Early Mother’s Day to all you lovely ladies out there!
