Weekend Project – Tile Coaster Tutorial

May 26th, 2012

Happy Memorial Day weekend everyone!  For those of you looking to get some crafting done on this long weekend, I’ve got the perfect project for you!  Remember these?

I’ve been getting a TON of comments and questions on my original post recently, so I decided the Tile Coaster Tutorial needed to be revisited.   Here we go!

First, gather your materials.  You will need:

  • 4 – 4″ x 4″ pieces of paper
  • 4 – 4.25″ x 4.25″ tiles
  • Mod Podge Gloss
  • Rustoleum Crystal Clear Enamel
  • 3″ foam brush
  • 3/8″ self adhesive felt pads

NOTE:  I chose these matching scrapbook papers, but you can use photos, wrapping paper, napkins – just about any paper good!  Also, if you are making a several sets I recommend buying the 12″ x 12″ scrapbook paper – you can get nine squares from each page!

Using your foam brush, apply a light layer of Mod Podge to your tiles.

Place your paper in the center of the tiles, and run your finger over top to get out any bubbles.  Wait fifteen minutes to allow to dry.

Apply 3 coats of Mod Podge to over top of the paper – allowing 15 minutes dry time in between each coat.

Wait at least an hour after you applied the third coat to apply the Rustoleum Crystal Clear Enamel spray.  In a well ventilated area (preferably outside) apply 2 or more light coats (within minutes of each other) of the enamel spray – spraying in a steady back and forth motion, slightly overlapping each coat.  Wait at least 30 minutes to fully dry.

Final step – add a felt pad to the four corners of the bottom of the tile.  And you’re done!

I made these coasters for game prizes for my friend’s baby shower last weekend.  They were a big hit!  I had extras leftover, so if you’d like one of the sets pictured below, please visit my Etsy store!

And if you’ve made any tile coaster, please send me pics!  I’d love to share them on my Facebook Page.

Happy Memorial Day weekend everyone!  Tune in next week, I’ve got a new fun tutorial on how to make your own fabric labels!  Until then!

Ok, so you have one week (GASP!) until Christmas, and if you’re like me, you’re going to desperately need this weekend to get your gift list back on track.  Here are a few tutorials I’ve found, used, and loved for gifts – all with less than 1 hour of labor involved!

2. Spa Towel

Perfect for friends who live in tropical areas, or those who simply like to relax after a nice hot shower.

3. Tile Coasters

Customize them for the holidays, or to match your gift recipient’s home!  Click here for my super simple tutorial.

That’s all for today – and I’ll probably be pretty quiet around here until Monday.  If you live in the Central PA area, please stop by between 12 and 5 pm for the Blueprint Crafts Handmade Holiday Open House!

Everything in stock will be 25% off, and I’ll have lots of goodies to snack on!  Hope to see you there!

Emily’s Coasters

April 8th, 2010

Just wanted to share pictures of the coasters I finished for Emily.

They are going to look great in her new home!

I wish they made these prints in fabric.  They would make such a pretty quilt, don’t you think?

Tile Coaster Tutorial

April 7th, 2010

So my good friend Emily just moved into her completely redone house a few weeks ago, and she asked me to make her some unique coasters.  I love the look of these from Target, but $15?  Get real.

UPDATE! For a more detailed tutorial, visit this post :)

For this tutorial, you’ll need a set of tiles – I got a handful from Home Depot for $0.20 a piece, some scraps of scrapbooking paper or any kind of paper really, some mod podge, clear acrylic spray, and felt pads for the bottom.

First, cut and measure you paper to the fit your tile.  The tiles I purchased were 4.25″ x 4.25″ so I cut my paper to 4″ squares.

Next, clean and dry your tiles – they are much easier to work with if you clean them off thoroughly.  After you have dried them off, apply a thin coat of mod podge to your tiles, place your decorative paper on top and smooth out all bubbles.  Allow this to dry for about 15 minutes, then apply 2 – 3 more coats allowing each coat to dry adequately.

After you’ve applied your mod podge top coats, take your tiles out to a well ventilated area and apply two coats of your acrylic spray (I sprayed mine outside in the grass).  The acrylic needs only a few minutes between coats to dry, then stick your felt pads on the bottom – one to each corner.   And if all goes well, you’ll come up with something like this!

Cute right!  And best of all CHEAP!  They are a great housewarming party, or hostess gift.  And they take very little time and effort – my kind of craft!

Today I’m going to finish up Emily’s – so excited to see how they look in her new house!

And, I’ve got a few big projects that I am STILL working on, and I CAN’T wait to show you all!  So stay tuned!
